Why I Don’t Call Myself a Luxury Photographer

“Luxury” is everywhere right now.

Luxury photographer.

Luxury wedding.

Luxury experience.

Luxury fill in the blank.

It’s on every website, in every Instagram bio, and plastered across every pricing guide trying to justify a higher price point.

But here’s the thing: I don’t consider myself a luxury photographer.

And honestly? I don’t want to be.

So… what’s wrong with the word “luxury”?

Nothing, inherently.

But for me, the word “luxury” conjures up images of polished perfection. Velvet ropes. Stilettos on marble floors. Quiet, clean, pristine.

That is so not me.

My dream clients? They’re barefoot. Prefer the wispy hair blowing across their face. They’re running through fields. Their kids are climbing trees and belly-laughing in oversized sweaters (if clothed at all). It’s rowdy. It’s real. It’s beautiful because of the chaos, not in spite of it.

To call that experience “luxury” would feel like putting a glass dome over something that was never meant to be tamed.

A higher price point doesn’t mean “luxury.”

Let’s be clear: just because I don’t call myself a luxury photographer doesn’t mean I’m not providing a premium experience.

There’s a difference.

I value every single detail of what I offer – from a seamless, high-touch booking process to styling support and intentional communication. I pour my heart and soul into making sure my clients feel seen, supported, and celebrated throughout the entire process.

But I do it in my dirty converse kicks, referred to as my “session shoes,” not a blazer or a dress.

Elevated? Yes.

Exclusive? No.

Luxury? Not quite.

So what do I call it?

Honestly? I don’t think it needs a label. What I do know is that the experience I provide is rooted in connection, intentionality, and artistry. It’s less about perfection, and more about presence.

It’s about creating a space where you can be, not perform.

Where your kids can be wild.

Where your dress gets dirty.

Where you don’t have to look or act a certain way to be worthy of a beautiful photograph.

Final thoughts:

You don’t have to slap the word “luxury” on your business to charge more.

You don’t have to chase a vibe that doesn’t match your values.

You can build a premium brand experience that feels like you…whether that’s boots in the mountains or barefoot in your backyard.

And if this blog rubs you the wrong way, I can assure you, that wasn’t my intention. If you utilize the verbiage “luxury photographer,” I love this for you! Here’s the best part about owning a business – we are all in our own lane, doing our own thing, and attracting our own clientele. I just want to continue making sure the people that are meant for me, find me. And if they read this and think – I need her. Then I’ve done my job.

P.S. If you’re a photographer who’s struggling with how to define your experience or price yourself confidently without following every trend, my mentorship program is built exactly for that. Let’s build a brand that’s real, honest, and uniquely you! Learn more and inquire about my mentorship and coaching offerings here!
